3D Printers

There is a potential risk of burns, as the print head can reach temperatures of up to 260°C and the heated bed of up to 120°C. We advise against reaching in the machine when the print head and/or heated bed are hot.  The machine will indicate when it is cool enough to remove a print from the bed.

Printing pure PLA plastic filament is considered safe, although good ventilation is still advised for possible unknown vapors released from coloring dyes in colored PLA.

Laser Cutter

There is a risk of fire and creating hazardous, irritating and combustible fumes/products when using the laser cutter.

Do not remove materials from the laser bed until they are cooled.

To reduce the circulation of fumes into the room, do not open the lid of the laser cutter for at least 30 seconds after the job has completed.

Only cut approved materials.  Any painted, stained or treated materials will not be cut or engraved in the cutter due to the nature of the fumes produced by these materials.

Never leave an operating laser cutter unattended.

Soldering Irons

There is a potential risk of burns, as the tip of the soldering iron can reach over 500 F.  The iron must be returned to its stand when not being actively used.  When finished the unit must be unplugged.

Eye protection must be worn when soldering.  The solder can pop and "spit" when heated and send solder flying.

Work in a well-ventilated area.  The smoke and fumes can be irritating to eyes and throat.

Wood Burner

There is a potential risk of burns, as the tip of the soldering iron can reach over 500 F.  The iron must be returned to its stand when not being actively used.  When finished the unit must be unplugged.

Work in a well-ventilated area.  The smoke and fumes can be irritating to eyes and throat.

Do not use any wood that has been painted, stained, molded or treated in any way.  The chemicals in these materials can be harmful when burned.
