Usage Statistics & Renewals: Embargo

Guidelines and central location for usage statistics of electronic resources.

Embargo

There are some current journal subscriptions that have aggregator access with a rolling embargo period. In some cases, if I feel it is needed, I will add the usage of the embargo content to one of the renewal spreadsheets or a significant price increase communication. One of the reasons I will add this usage is if the current subscription usage and the aggregator usage is coming from the same platform. Another reason could be that the usage between the two platforms is similar.

How embargo usage is gathered:

Embargo usage is obtained by a journal report that breaks the usage down by the year content was published. [A report for 2018 will break down usage for content published in 2018, 2017, 2016, etc.]. I count the usage for the content published during the embargo period and the total is the usage for that time period.

Example:

American Journal of Archaeology

This journal is part of the JSTOR CSP (current JSTOR subscription titles). It is also available through JSTOR A&S II with a 4 year embargo.

The 2017 total JSTOR usage is 136. There is a 4 year embargo, so the embargo usage would be for content published 2013-2017. I pull the 2017 usage report that breaks down the usage by content year publication. The 2017 content usage was 1; 2016 content usage was 4; 2015 content usage was 0; 2014 content usage was 2; 2013 content usage was 0. The embargo period usage for 2017 was 7.

If embargo usage is not included on the spreadsheet, and you would like to see it for a specific title, please contact Andrea.
