Using press sources in your research

Articles from newspapers and magazines can be either primary or secondary sources, depending on how you are using them in your research and the disciplinary approach or lens you are taking with your topic.

Alternative News Sources

Jezebel
Jezebel was launched in 2007 by Anna Holmes as part of the Gawker Media Network and was meant to serve as an alternative to traditional women’s publications.
Slate
Slate is a daily magazine on the web and podcast network. Founded in 1996, it is a general-interest publication offering analysis and commentary about politics, news, business, technology, and culture.

Covering international news for an online, global audience.

Alt-PressWatch
A full text database comprised of articles from alternative and independent press newspapers, magazines and journals.

Print Newspaper Coverage

Ethnic NewsWatch
Focus is on ethnic area studies, and related arts, business, education, environment, history, journalism, political science and sociology news. Some Spanish language sources are available.

Use the "Publications> Publication Subject" search in the upper left menu to find newspapers from a particular ethnic group, or search by title, if known.
International Newsstream
Provides the most recent news content outside of the US and Canada, with archives which stretch back decades featuring newspapers, newswires, and news sites in active full-text format.

Contains all of the news content provided to Puget Sound by ProQuest. Includes alternative, national, international, local and historical news.

Newspaper Source
Provides cover-to-cover full text for national (U.S.) newspapers, including The Christian Science Monitor, USA Today, The Washington Post and The Washington Times. The database also contains selective full text for regional (U.S.) newspapers. Also includes international news sources including The Times (London), The Toronto Star and others.
New York Times (ProQuest)
Includes The New York Times; Late Edition (East Coast), New York Times Magazine, and New York Times Book Review.
Wall Street Journal
In-depth news coverage of national and international finance as well as coverage of hard news.
