Interlibrary Loan

Turnaround time

On average copies take 2-5 working days. Some arrive sooner. However, other items may take several weeks to obtain or they simply may not be available at all.  Books may take 7-10 days to arrive depending on the location of the lending library.

Hard to get items:

  • Textbooks for current classes
  • Some dissertations
  • Some newly published books
  • Books located outside the United States
  • British Library materials - The charge $35-$50 for items
  • Entire journal issues
  • Older materials - Try Internet Archive.  This site has many older materials that are scanned as PDFs.

What if I need something fast?

  • It's best to plan ahead.  If you need a copy quickly, please submit a request as soon as possible and use the calendar in the ILL form to select a reasonable need by date.  Copies usually arrive within 2-5 working days.

How will I be notified?

  • You will be notified by email
    • Notifications for copies will contain a link and passcode for access to the PDF.
    • Notifications for loans will contain the expiration date for how long the item will be left on the hold shelf.
      • Items will be kept on the hold shelf for 14 days.  If materials are not picked up within 14 days, the items will be returned to the lending library.

How much does it cost?

  • The library pays up to $12 per request. Any charges above $12 are deferred to the patron to be paid upon pick-up at the Circulation Desk. Faculty overages are billed to their departments.  Fortunately, we are able to obtain most items free of charge. However, you are responsible for paying any lost replacement fees associated with the loan via your library record.

Where do I pick up my items?

Physical materials (Print and media)

  • ILL materials can be picked up at the circulation desk on the main floor of Collins Library.

Electronic materials (Articles, book chapters, etc.)

  • Electronic copies will be posted to your Tipasa account as PDFs.
  • In order to view your electronic copies, you will require that a PDF reader software such as Adobe Reader is installed on your device.
  • Electronic copies will only be accessible for 5 views or 30 days (whichever comes first).  After which, it is deleted from the system.
  • It is good practice to download the PDF to your computer or a flash drive.

How long can I keep my ILL loans?

  • Copies: Articles and chapters are yours to keep.  However, remember to save your PDFs to a personal drive or flash drive as you only have 5 views or 30 days access to the PDF before it is deleted.
  • Returnables: Loan periods and any other special conditions for print and media loans are determined by the lending library.
  • Renewals: If you need to renew an item, you can renew items from your Interlibrary Loan account. Log on to Tipasa and click on View/Renew Checked Out Items.
    • If you are having trouble renewing an item, please contact the ILL staff at ill@pugetsound.edu or 253.879.3612. Also, be aware that the lending library may not grant the renewal.
  • You are expected to return all loans on time and bear in mind that all Interlibrary loans are subject to recall by the lending library.

Where do I return my ILL items?

  • ILL materials can be returned in the outside book drop located to the right of the library entrance or in the inside book drop located at the circulation desk on the main floor of the library.

Need additional assistance?

  • If the resources you need are not available or your ILL request has become unfilled,
    • We suggest faculty contact a subject librarian to see if they can order the item for the Collins Library collection.
    • We suggest students contact a subject librarian to see if they can assist you in your research and/ or help you find a similar resource.
