Advocates for Institutional Change (A.I.C.) stemmed from the national unrest following Mizzou’s uproar in early November 2015 against the ongoing racial injustice.
A group of Puget Sound students met Sunday, November 15, 2015 in Marshall Hall to discuss implications of the protests across college campuses that were building from the larger national movement, Black Lives Matter. The group was comprised of student club leaders, such as Black Student Union, Latinos Unidos, DeMasc, Queer Alliance, Puget Sound Student Union, Peer Allies, Hillel, TransAction, and other concerned students.
At the first meeting of students, the group was not an official coalition, nor was there a name for the gathering. Students expressed their grievances about the current campus climate of Puget Sound and took turns making a list of their concerns. From there, the full list of concerns were grouped into categories and then ranked according to relevancy. Some concerns were grouped with similar ones, and other concerns were left off the board due to unfeasibility. The remaining concerns were reduced to a list of 12, and officially became the 12 demands.
