Abby Williams Hill Paintings
This is a digital collection of nearly 150 paintings and sketches by Abby Williams Hill, which range in date between 1886-1934.
Abby Williams Hill Journals
This is a digital collection of an assortment of journals belonging to Abby Williams Hill. These journals focus on Hill’s travels throughout the United States with her four children between 1895 and 1906 and provide a unique female perspective on significant issues affecting the nation at that time, including education, tourism, and the rights of women, African Americans, Native Americans, and the working class. The journals that relate to national parks include:
- Mount Rainier & Hood Canal journal (1895). In this journal, Hill takes a 26-day expedition to Mt. Rainier and writes about her experiences.
- Northern Pacific Railway Commission journal, Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 (1905-1906). Hill painted in Yellowstone National Park in both 1905 and 1906. In 1905 she focused on painting Yellowstone Canyon and Yellowstone Falls and in 1906 she painted many of the park’s famous geysers.
Environmental Preservation in the Progressive Era
This primary source set from the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) documents the environmental movement and different types of environmental advocacy in the Progessive Era, the establishment of the National Park Service by Congress in 1916, and the preservation of areas including Yosemite and Yellowstone.
Mapping the National Parks
This collection from the Library of Congress documents the history, cultural aspects and geological formations of areas that eventually became National Parks through maps of the regions and of the parks themselves.
National Park Service History Electronic Library: Park Brochures
A portal to electronic publications covering the history of the National Park Service and the cultural and natural history of the national parks, monuments, and historic sites of the U.S. National Park System. Contains PDFs of historic park brochures, including both cover and contents.
