Why STS?

The study of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) uses historical, philosophical, and sociological understandings to examine the relationship between science and society. By emphasizing the political, socioeconomic, and cultural contexts within different scientific developments and movements, we are able to minimize underlying biases that may impact these important advancements. By better understanding past scientific developments, we try to identify individual and community contributions to the history and present state of science. Ultimately, STS studies bring up the question of whether or not we as a society should use knowledge from nature to tell us more about our modern society. It also allows us to examine the purposes of past research and how it can be utilized to support varying historical and contemporary scientific movements. By truly understanding the social implications of scientific research, we see how science can broadly influence various aspects of our society. For STS scholars, science is not just kept within the laboratory, but rather reaches out and impacts our society in more ways than we may initially realize.
